This is the only park in Uganda to be composed of primary tropical lowland forest. Semliki National Park protects an extension of the Congo vast Ituri lowland rain forest and is of particular interest to birders with forty West Africa species bound nowhere else in East Africa. These include; Congo Serpent Eagle, Long-tailed Hawk, White-crested Hornbill, Nkulengu Rail, Black-wattled Hornbill, and Lyre-tailed Honey-guide.The forest is very dense and quite flat, creating a startling contrast to the rugged mountains of the moon nearby. The Semliki River attracts many animals. The park is home to eight species of primates, 400 species of birds and about 300 species of butterflies. Elephant, Buffalo, Civet, Leopard, Bush baby, and flying squirrels can also be found, situated within the remote Semliki valley site of the Sampaya Hot springs. It is about three hours’ drive from Fort Portal, birders who make it to Semliki NP will be richly rewarded with some of the best forest birding in Uganda.
